South Island, New Zealand

Mondays, eh? Particularly Mondays in the run up to Christmas. I personally am in need of a little mental centring as I work through my Christmas list, so I thought I’d publish this for all of you who also need to zen out over some pretty pictures of nature. Words will be minimal; photos of the beautiful South Island of New Zealand will be abundant.

From the first sight I caught of the coastline of New Zealand I knew I was in for an education on what natural beauty really is.

The education continued on our scenic flight to Milford Sound.

We saw mountains, with peaks sharp and snow topped;

Snow so fresh and pillowy I just wanted to leave one big footprint in it;

Shady, cold valleys – maybe trolls live here;

And then the oddly compelling sight of mountain peaks pointing to blue, blue ocean;

We caught one last glimpse of that epic coastline, bathed in mist, before banking in to Milford Sound itself;

Counting trees as we zoomed past;

Trying to catch our reflection in the water like a mirror;

Vistas opened up between mountains, then closed just as quickly;

From the water – spotting waterfalls (always a hobby of mine);

Spotting fellow craft, dwarfed by cliffs;

Mountains, more mountains than you could shake a stick at;

Here comes the sun;

And here we go chasing waterfalls again;

So my question is. Are you a mountains person? A waterfalls person? Or an ocean mist person?

    WOW. This is so unaffected and beautiful. I think I could be any and all kinds of people with views like these. (I actually worry that I would suffer from altitude sickness, so I’ll stick to the pictures for now.) The vistas between the mountains are so lovely.

    Simply stunningly beautiful! Like I said to you before, your pictures of New Zealand are basically making me drool and wanting to plan a trip there right now! I’ve always gone back and forth about whether I’m a beach person or a mountain person, and it looks like New Zealand offers the best of both!

    We visited the South Island of New Zealand earlier this year and just loved everything about it. We drove to Milford Sound to take a cruise, so I enjoyed seeing your photos of the flight in. We couldn’t believe the site of that tiny landing strip among the peaks! #FarawayFiles

    What lovely photos. I think I am a mountains person – or maybe I just love all the landscapes in New Zealand’s Sth Island.

    It’s such a beautiful part of the world isn’t it! Gorgeous photos
    I was trying to get a booking for a Milford sound overnight cruise during easter but it’s become impossible; will have to wait till I move home.
