This month I turn 30! Eeek! I’m pretty excited, and as I’ve already decided this month will be the month of treat yo’self I thought I’d lay out my plans therein.
Picture taken from last year’s birthday celebrations, atop the Sky Bar in Bangkok
Travel ¦¦ Yep this one’s the biggie. I’m off to Santorini! I can’t wait. We’re going for 4 days and I expect to get my annual dose of vitamin D in one hit.
I’m also going to be spending part of a weekend in London celebrating the 30th of my lovely friend, seeing another friend play in a concert, and hosting another friend and showing her the delights of Bedford.
Family ¦¦ I’m spending the last weekend of the month with my Mum and sister. It’s a bank holiday weekend so we should have lots of time to do genteel things like eat lots of birthday cake.
Shopping ¦¦ I didn’t think I was a bit shopper but I’ve already bought things from Long Tall Sally and SheIn under the guise of holiday wear but as I’m only going for the aforementioned 4 days I feel I may have overcooked it. Full report to follow.
I’ve also found a pretty decent pair of jeans for tall people from Topshop, which I’d give a 7/10. The shape is lovely, nice soft fabric, but they stretch out like nobody’s business. So that’s a bit of shame, but they were only £38 so that’s better than spending £65 on a Long Tall Sally pair that do the same.
Spa related activities ¦¦ I’m not really a fan of massages and I didn’t enjoy the one facial I had once, so I think I might go for some slightly more low-key options like brow and lash tinting, and maybe getting my nails done.
Hair ¦¦ My hair is in desperate need for a cut and colour, having had nothing done to it for well over 6 months. I’ve booked in to a new place and I’m excited to see how it turns out. I’m going just before my holidays as well so I should be salon fresh!
Moving to self hosted WordPress ¦¦ Yikes. I’ve been thinking about this for a while and I think it’s time to make the switch. No time like the present, etc. I’ve been reluctant due to the cost of it (and hassle factor, I know nothing about coding) because I don’t monetise this site and have no plans to. However, people spend money on their hobbies all the time, and often a darn sight more than the cost of hosting for a year, so maybe I shouldn’t be so hard on myself. Most nerdy birthday present to myself ever??
Eat what I want ¦¦ I’m still trying to be healthy when I can, but as this is my birthday month, if I want to eat cake I’m going to eat cake.
Go to the cinema ¦¦ I love the cinema, I really do. It’s an expensive treat these days but if something takes my fancy I think I might splash out. I might suggest a trip with my sister and Mum because they’ve got a fancy cinema near them that’s got sofas and waiter service! A Hologram for the King (trailer) looks like it might be good, so I may see if they’re interested in that
Thus commenceth my birthday month. Happy 30 to me!
-Rachel
I’ve ‘just’ left my thirties *sob* and have devoted this year to my ‘festival of forty’…..
Cannot wait to read about Santorini!
Safe travels

I honestly think it looks like you’re having the best time during your festival of forty! I need a handy tagline to accompany this year, I think.
I can’t wait to go to Santorini! I’m so very excited!
Sounds like you’ve got an awesome month planned out! It’s my birthday month too – can’t believe we’re in May already!
I think I’m going to have to borrow a few of these ideas from you 🙂 (if only I could just apparate to Santorini! hehe)

Ooh happy birthday month to you too! May babies are the best 🙂
Yes definitely borrow away, and write about them so I can read about them. I think it would be cool to see how Perth birthday celebrations and Bedford birthday celebrations vary…!
Happy Birthday Month! Santorini sounds lovely 🙂
Thank you! I think Santorini is going to be amazing. I can’t wait, I just want to go already!
A very happy birthday to you Rachel! 🙂 It sounds like you will have a great month ahead. Especially the cake part, definitely indulge in more than your fair share of cake! 🙂
Away From The Blue Blog
Thank you! I’m looking forward to it. Thirty can’t be so bad, right!?
I plan to have as much cake as I can without turning into an actual cake myself, don’t you worry! Have a piece for me too, won’t you?
Yay!!! Happy Birthday Month! My husbands birthday is on the 5th and we will celebrate all week much to his dismay haha.
Thank you! Happy birthday to Kyle, his birthday is the day after my sisters. Shame ‘May the 5th be with you’ doesn’t have such a good ring to it 😉
I hope you both eat plenty of cake too!
Happy birthday month 🙂 And my Christmas year 2 years ago was moving to a self hosting site. It was a hustle for a whole week but it was really worth it in the end. Like you said, treat yoself!
Thank you! Oooh, how was your switching experience? Mind if I shoot you an email for the gory details?
Yes 🙂 Ask away!
enjoy Santorini! And all the best!:)
Thank you Tanja! I’m sure Santorini will be a blast.
yay for birthday month! self hosted WP is the way to go – i started mine that way and glad i did! and yay for shopping and pampering and hair and family and the whole gamut! 🙂
xoxo cheshire kat
I so wish I’d started with self hosted WP, I just wasn’t sure I was going to blog for long enough to make it worth it. I should have had more faith from the beginning! Looking forward to joining you in WP land. We can talk plugins and other such thrilling things 😀
Also I think ‘the whole gamut’ is going to be my motto for the month. Yep.
Happy birthday month!! Enjoy!
Thanks Chelsea! I’m pretty excited about it all!
yay for birthday months! I moved over to self hosted about a year ago and am glad i did. the initial switch was slightly stressful, but i love how custom i can make my site now.
I’m just gearing my site up on WP now and already I love it way more. It’s just… better. How was your switching experience? Any top tips you can pass on?
Happy upcoming birthday to you! 🙂 Celebrating the whole month sounds like a pretty good idea to me; I’ll have to start implementing that. So do you already use WordPress or are you switching from somewhere else? I wish I had started with WP as it’s so prevalent and has so many free template options. But since I’m so entrenched with Blogger, it’s hard to make the switch…
Thank you! I figure if you can’t do it when you turn 30, when can you?!
I’m switching from Blogger to self hosted WordPress. I wish I’d started there too, but I’m mostly all switched now (just have to repoint my domain) and I have to say, it wasn’t nearly as expensive or bothersome as I thought it would be. I migrated in a weekend, easily. Just lots of reformatting to do now…
It’s my Birthday month too 🙂 It’s great getting two bank holidays in one month isn’t it, with holidays etc I don’t think I’m actually going to do a full week’s work this month! Santorini is meant to be stunning, my mam and Dad went last year and I think it was their favourite of all the Greek islands they’ve been too. Exactly, blogging is a hobby and the payment should last you the whole year, it sounds like a good Birthday present to me!
Enjoy your cake!

Yay happy birthday to you too! It’s a great month, remember when we had an extra bank holiday in May too (was it a royal wedding?) and basically didn’t have to show up for work at all!?
I’m glad your folks enjoyed Santorini, it looks like such a beautiful place I can’t even get over the fact it’s real.
And I hope you enjoy your cake too. Plenty of it!
All of those sound like such great plans to treat your self during your birth month! The massage and the shopping sound awesome, but I bet that you’re going to enjoy your trip to Santorini and spending time your mom and sister even more! Cheers to your birth month!
Santorini will definitely be the highlight, but really I’m looking forward to the whole thing. I accidentally got a bit of a head start on the shopping already which is actually quite unlike me, so I will need to treat myself a little less in that area I think… But the rest still stands 🙂
Woo sounds like awesome plans! Definitely deserved – a trip to Santorini sounds amazing!

I think so too! I can’t wait for Santorini. I’ve heard nothing but glowing praise for it so I’m sure I’m in for a treat.
Ohhhh, exciting!! 🙂 What lovely plans you have, especially to travel! Looking forward to some really lovely snaps from your holiday.
Thanks, Marcella. I’m looking forward to taking them! It’s a shame the ice cream I’ll be eating while I take them won’t also be able to travel down the internet to you… One day!
yayyyyy birthday month! i love going to the cinema as well. it’s cheap here (compared to sydney lol) but KC doesn’t think so and he always ruins it for me by not wanting to buy snacks and stuff. i mean, i don’t want to spend $50 either but i want a dang drink lol. and eat all the cake. so jealous you are going to santorini!
Birthdayyyyy! It’s just such an experience all around, you have to have the snacks! I’m sad now that I can’t really eat popcorn with my stupid braces, so I may have to find a substitute snack. I’m thinking pick n mix might just work.
I can’t believe I’m going to Santorini, I’m so excited!!
