On My Doorstep

I’ve lived in my current house, in my current town, for just over a year. That’s a whole year of getting to know this new bit of the country and you know, I thought I was doing quite a good job of it.
But over the weekend, I went for a walk and discovered a whole entire country park, with a lake and everything. It’s just a mile from my house, and I had no idea it was there.

Boom. That’s a big ol’ lake right there. This is the Priory Country Park, Bedford, which is managed by the council and completely free to use. There are grassy areas surrounding the lake, which you can picnic on, walk your dog, or sunbathe*. There are plenty of well maintained paths to walk or cycle along; no wellies required here.

We chose the main path which goes all around the edge of the lake. It’s about a mile long, and gave lots of opportunities to look at the view out over the water.

There’s a marina there, so there are plenty of boats to look at – although they were all moored up on the day we visited – as well as ducks, coots, canada geese, swans… standard. There are fishing platforms all around the lake, which I guess are probably useful if you like to fish but we mostly just used them as photography platforms… Kids these days.

It’s also got terns though, which are quite cool, and there are bird hides you can sit in and watch them swooping and diving into the water.

Oh and there’s also a canoe slalom. No big deal. These guys were killing it – we think they were scoping out the course for an event the next day.

We also happened upon a group of dedicated subjects, following their leader unhesitatingly. I’m not saying we stumbled across a cult or anything, but…

There was even a spot where, with the terns wheeling overhead, you could almost almost imagine you were by the seaside.

I’m just so surprised that this is literally on my doorstep and I was totally oblivious.
Have you ever discovered anything really cool that’s embarrassingly close to where you live?

P.S. Sorry about the slightly dodgy picture quality. I only had my iPhone with me – just goes to show what little I was expecting!

* Weather permitting. As you can probably tell from the pictures, this weekend wasn’t the warmest…

I love finds like that! I think we all get into our routines of going from point A to point B and sometimes we forget that we should go right down that street if we’ve only ever gone left before just to see what’s there. What a cool place – I hope you’re able to head back when it’s sunnier!

I know! And I thought I was good at exploring my new town, but apparently not…! I hope I can go back when it’s sunnier, too. Just waiting on that sunshine…
